IRAQ: UN Special Representative of the Secretary General for Iraq Nickolay Mladenov has welcomed the decision by Iraq’s former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to step aside and allow Haider al-Abadi to form a government. Mladenov said that al-Maliki’s decision would allow for a peaceful transition of power in “a country that has suffered a lot of bloodshed and violence.” The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) shared his comments in Arabic on August 15.
