IRISH GUARDSMAN FROM LISBURN. Co. ANTRIM. The village of Tincourt is just east of Peronne, and was begun in June 1917 as the Germans retreated to the Hindenburg Line. It later became a Casualty Clearing Station from May 1917 until 23rd March 1918 when the village was evacuated. When the village was recovered again on 6th September 1918 it was in a ruinous state and from that date until December 1918 it once more became a clearing station. 27 year old Private Joseph Ferris of the 1st Battalion Irish Guards was with a working party on a railway line when he was wounded and died some days later as a result of his injuries on the 2nd December 1917. Joseph was the son of John and Annie Ferris of 36 Grove Street, Low Road, Lisburn, and was buried in Tincourt New Military Cemetery.
