*** IRISH WATER HELP *** A big thanks to Terry for arming me with this information. This is ANOTHER reason not to pay Irish water. Terry says- I have taken the following information and figures from the book - The Natural House Book by David Pearson. Although this book was published in 1991, I firmly believe that the figures presented are more or less accurate for today and are perhaps even a conservative estimate by comparison? I would also add that while some manufactures appliances have improved their efficiency, rising water costs may now have out stripped any possible benefits those machines may have offered. In the developed world, an average family of 4 uses between 10,000 and 40,000 gallons of water per year TOILET - An ordinary Toilet in the UK uses between 9 Litres (2 gallons) and 20 Litres (4.5 gallons) New and more efficient toilets have been developed that use only 6 litres (1.3 gallons) per flush or even as low as 4 litres (less than 1 gallon). I would hazard a guess and say that in Ireland and the UK, there are not too many homes that have these new toilets? SHOWERS - A standard shower delivers about 20 litres (4.5 gallons) per MINUTE. Apparently there are water saving shower heads available that can reduce the cost but possibly the trade off may be that your shower will no longer be as powerful i.e. perhaps forget the power shower and say hello to the quick step in and step out trickle shower? TAPS - Depending upon the water pressure and the type of tap, flows vary between 10 and 20 litres (2 and 4.5 gallons) per MINUTE. But for most uses, a flow of 3 litres (about 0.5 gallons) is adequate. A steadily dripping tap can lose 90 litres (20 gallons) per DAY. WASHING MACHINES - Washing Machines use between 110 and 220 litres (24 and 48 Gallons) of water PER LOAD. If you have a small amount of washing only, consider if you really need a machine? It will certainly be quicker, to do it by hand or in a Laundromat once a week or perhaps a fortnight. DISHWASHERS - Hand washing dishes for a family of 4 in a bowl without running water uses between 25 and 40 litres (5.5 and 9 gallons) a day. Automatic dishwashers use about 60 litres (13 gallons) per cycle. Part loads waste water, so unless you wash all the dishes, pots and pans together once a day as a full load, a dishwasher will be a considerable water waster. GARDENS - Hoses and sprinklers use about 9 litres 92 gallons) every MINUTE. I would like to add myself that this is not taking into account people with illnesses and conditions which require them to be continually hydrated and washed. The media is reporting people with these conditions will most likely not see any kind of help with costs for up to 6 years. Still think your Irish Water bills are going to be under 300 euro? Think again. You should not have to make a choice between water and food to survive this is a HUMAN RIGHT! DO NOT PAY!!!! They get away with this, what will be the next thing.......? ~K~
