IRON and USE OF IRON (Fe) in QURAN: We shall show them our signs in the universe and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that this is the truth. Is it not enough that your Lord is the witness of all things? (Qur’an 41:53) Quran 57:25 states that iron has not only been “sent down,” an accurate recounting of the origin of the element on our planet, but that iron also has many uses for mankind, many of which are obvious, right? What’s not so obvious is that one of the most biologically diverse molecules that we require to survive is iron based, and so iron is literally necessary for our survival. Haemoproteins, the key ‘ingredient’ to which is an iron ion, has so many functions throughout the body from electron transfer in the Kreb’s cycle (energy and respiration) to catalysis to blood acidity regulation. Without haemoproteins, without the unique chemical structure of iron, the oxygen we breathe could never be transferred to the cells in our body. No other ion but an iron ion is capable of it; they’re either too volatile or lack the affinity for oxygen than iron inherently has.
