IRONIC ADVENT UPDATE FROM THE PILGRIM ROAD: For all those (OK, both of you) who actually read my Ironic Advent Meditations, Im sorry, I guess, that I havent been able to get one done every day this Advent. Exams, papers, grades, blah, blah, blah--I always have them, but for some strange reason this year, I actually worked hard and spent a lot on getting them done well and in a timely manner. Probably because I was trying to hurry and get away to Texas to be with family, especially my sister who just had serious back surgery. I am now on the road, but, as is my wont, have taken a rather circuitous route. I am in Atlanta, to have a day of Christmas with my youngest daughter, Jennifer. WE shared gifts (kind of). I gave her a gift and she gave me a gift that I gave her to give me (a Pacer shirt). Well she did give me a big canister of that nasty Walmart popcorn (a family tradition going back to my mother). But the most fun thing was getting to read the awesome papers she has written this year for her Global Politics class and her Shakespeare and Folklore class. Sarah Enloe, you would love her essays on strong women in Shrew and Alls Well (Diana, not Helena). She had such good teachers in those two classes who gave her such good guidance. Thats a great gift to a parent, by the way. Its a beautiful day in Atlanta, but I hope to get suitably gloomy after I leave Jenny to write something. I promise, soon, in fact, to solve the problems of torture, gun control, and racism, but, for now, Ive got a hiking date planned with my daughter for this afternoon (and a long long drive after that). Jennifer Phifer Strange, coming through Shreveport for sure!
