IS HE SICK OR SICK IN THE HEAD? ”Dare you tell him he’s a fraud, a thief” By Ruth Syovata A blue trouser with white stripes and a green sweater-like shirt with pockets at the back. Do those colours ring a bell? I bet they do. Well, if they don’t , allow me to bring you up to speed. He has been around for the past one semester and is still around. He moves around the campus residential areas begging for money. Begging is now becoming his ‘field of expertise’ which he has no expertise at all. This ‘profession’ of his is becoming a bother to me and many other comrades. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing personal against beggars. I am not the kind that tell beggars to go work for their own money. However, this particular individual has managed to not only catch my attention with his blue and green ‘uniform’ but also his begging techniques are quite wanting. His claims are sarcastic, almost laughable but again disheartening when I think of the many kind-hearted comrades who fall for his claims. He claims to have skin cancer that has been unsuccessfully treated for the past few years, yet he has the strength to move around the campus knocking on every door and waving his long-since expired permit on the face of anyone who dares open the door. As if knocking on my door every single day is not enough, he goes ahead and visits one specific hostel two to three times a day. This has been the routine since last semester. Dare you tell him that he’s a fraud, a thief, a con or any related adjective that suits him. He stops begging and moves around claiming that he comes from a well off family that can support him. He repeatedly mentions that he studied law. I personally heard him say “Nimesoma sheria, wazazi wangu wana uwezo!!”. Well, it’s a good thing that the ‘learned colleagues’ are well represented in the main campus. He takes his self appraisals to another level by saying that he has the ability to put someone behind the bars if they joke around with him. I once heard him say, “ ntapiga hao risasi…warudi kwao haraka”. My question is whether this man is skin cancer sick or sick in the head to beg in such a big institution armed with a permit that expired on December 2013 and weird claims. Who will find me the answers?
