IS IT TRUE THAT EVENTS, SITUATIONS OR PEOPLE MAKE US FEEL WHAT WE FEEL? Some would have you believe that your feelings are caused by events, situations or other people. Think of a past event that you responded to with a specific emotion and its associated emotions. The only way you can think of changing those feelings is by wishing the event didnt happen. If someone else made you feel and act in a certain manner then the only way you can address those feelings is to approach the other person and attempt to change their feelings in order to change yours. How can this be done? This is a challenge to the concept of amending the past. Believing that an event from the past, a person, or a feeling that is historic can effect your feelings today means that no-one would ever be able to move on. We would all be stuck and there would be no possibility or hope of ever recovering in any way shape or form. Can you imagine if everyone felt hurt when experiencing rejection? Some might feel hurt, and some might associate hurt with rejection. The truth is that there are many ways to experience a situation, event or person. Rejection can bring about feelings of hurt, anger, sadness, depression, relief and even happiness at times. So the way we react to a situation is more realistic an angle to take rather than the situation. Everyone feels different emotion in the same situations and this is evidence to support that it is not the situation but on fact the way we react. Accepting that we have no control over people, places and things and that the only control we have in any given situation is the way we react in that given situation is key to moving forward in a positive manner.
