IS MAKERERE BIGGER THAN UGANDA? (It’s time to break the silence,) First and foremost, allow me take this flare moment to congratulate the incumbent H.E Bbowe Ivan for setting up a precedent of becoming the 80th and first independent candidate to win the Makerere guild race under the mult-party dispensation system. Secondly, if Wanyama, Mbabazi or Munjinya stood for president of the republic of Uganda today and used their UACE certificate as mandated by the Uganda electoral commission constitution and one of them wins, what will be the take on this by the Makerere electoral commission? For one to stand for president of Uganda you need a minimum of senior s6 result and for Makerere University, you need to be on normal progress with no retake, is Makerere bigger than Uganda? Think of a situation where a student is in fourth year (assume medicine with a CGP of 3 and above) and is not allowed to stand for guild president because of a retake??? Is Makerere University bigger than Uganda?? Am pushing forward for an amendment of the guild constitution to give room to any student to stand for guild president as long as he has been in the University for atleast a period of one year. I strongly believe Makerere with a population of approximately 35,000 to 60,000 is just an atom of Uganda with about 35million Ugandans. No wonder Baraka Obama knows the president of Uganda but he doesn’t know if there is a university called Makerere. If Andrew, Wanyama or mbabazi Boniface became a president of the republic of Uganda today by use of a UACE result slip, he would just make a call to Obama to have dinner together which a Makerere university guild president can’t do The article in the guild constitution that bars student from standing who are not on normal progress was enacted based on limited scientific research and proof. It also deprives us from an opportunity of a getting a more competent guild president. I need all your support on these amendments. Putting that aside, in 2012, after the coming in of kata Ivan for guild president, as a year one student offering economics, I was fully convinced that no other party would ever rule Makerere again other than UYD/DP due to the charismatic skills and competency that kata had, but this never came true. In 2013, after the coming of our loved H. E Adeke Anna Ebaju, I just concealed by view again that FDC will have to rule for atleast more 5 years before another party would take over, and there was a possibility of this coming true but you have all seen what has happened, it was only short lived despite the fact that Anna was seen as a messiah coming in to save Makerere student from the endless challenges and struggles and also to create a clean path way for the incoming fdc flag bearers. As a political observer and an analyst, I put this blame on, tribal power struggles at Najjanakubi that have migrated up to Makerere University. Whether you are agree with me or not, I have seen an invisible hand under the tribal vice trying to divide the fdc party at both the headquarter and Makerere at large; where the east, north and central Uganda fight the western region. Am a believer in the rule of law and democracy, though I reign from eastern Uganda, am in full support of mugisha mutu’s leadership and government since he was democratically elected and I had also devoted my efforts to support Munjinya Andrew despite the fact that he hails from western Uganda because he would guarantee the party an assured win. But due to the invisible hand, this couldn’t come true just way i rested my case so that am not counted to be party of the party’s problems. Brothers and sisters, let’s learn from the past two regimes of Makerere, individuals are not greater than a collection of the many under an organized system called a party. We need to have the love for a common cause and not to forget our roots, and above all, to fight for a common will despite the fact that it would hurt those close to us so that we can leave a clean path for our brothers and sisters who are coming after us. Let us not be counted party of the world’s problems but its solutions. If you feel you can’t help someone, please atleast don’t hurt them. Makerere University is not the end; it’s just a stepping stone to a bigger level. Life doesn’t leave you empty, it always replaces everything, if it asks you to put something down, its because it wants you to pick something better. I couldn’t imagine a ruling fdc party would come forth after nrm after such a successful regime of Adeke. The calculation was wrong. As an economist I strongly believe in making a rational winning strategy despite the fact that It would not please a few. In football, you are advised not to change a winning team/squad, if Andrew was the winning strategy, we were to fight whole heartedly as a team to see that he is there. I have no kind words for those who fought against Andrew’s candidature, I think of a world where my little children will not be ganged according to tribe, religion, colour, national origin not even friendship but the content of their brain. Just a couple of months we were sworn in as a student government, as we usher in a new regime next month, with malice towards none, charity for all, firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive to finish the work we are in, to bid up everyone’s words and to forgive everyone’s wrongs. Forgive us where we erred. God bless you, God bless Makerere as we build for the future.
