IS YOUR DONATION BEING RIPPED OFF? Do you ever give any consideration when you donate to how much of what you donate actually goes for what it is intended? It is unfortunate that many large well known organizations give less than a dime for every dollar given to them for the cause. The American Red Cross pays their CEO a $651,957 salary plus expenses. The United Way’s president receives $375,000 plus expresses and benefits while only ten cents on a dollar given to the March of Dimes is given to the needy. On the other hand the Salvation Amy Commissioner Tod Bassett was only paid $13,000. The Lions give 100% and St. Jude Research Hospital uses 100% towards funding children with cancer and who have no insurance. When you give locally, ask whether the organization has a paid director and staff, such as the local United Way has or whether the director and staff are volunteers of the organization where most or all money or materials is going directly to the poor or to the cause. There are many food pantry’s and organizations in our community that give 100% of all money or mostly all away since they have a volunteer staff and aren’t paying out $100,000.00 to a staff before any other money can be given out to what it was intended. Maybe charities and charitable organizations should stop being for profit businesses and become again what they were intended to be, made up of people who care about others and accepting lower pay than the private sector or being run by volunteers. One Great local organization that gives so so much back is the Salvation Army and there are so many more deserving local organizations that may not be able to give you a receipt for a tax write off but at least what you do give will go to the cause and not 90 cents on the dollar to pay overhead. Below are a couple of charts given to us with interesting data. Please Give for the needs are great, but please give to those who will use your donation as you intend it to be used.
