ISLAM AND POLITICS (Part II) ...BY Muhammad Ali (Comrade) After a two year reign, Abubakar (RA) died and Umar (RA) succeeded him. After Umar (RA) passed away, Uthman (RA) became the third Caliph. Some Sahabahs were said to have opted for Ali (RA) then these became a political party known as Shiatu Ali. This party continued in the Uthmans (RA) regime and later escalated into rebellion group. The group also subdivided into Shia and Khawarij in the reign of Ali (RA) especially after the two civil wars of Jamal and Siffin took place between the Muslims. This resulted into political division of the Muslims into two major houses of Umawiyya and Abbasiyya. The various events that took place attracted many intellectuals who made volumes of political analysis and produced number of canons. These scholars such as Al-Farrabi, Al-Mawardi, Ibn Khaldun, Al-Ghazali and host of others were known to be classical Islamic political thinkers whose works emphasized on; Who should govern? What qualities are required? How to govern? What are duties and responsibilities of leaders and obligations of followers? Contact of Muslim and non-Muslim cultures as a result colonisation or rather imperialism broke a new ground for Islamic political thinkers where many scholars began to emerge as critics and subsequently Islamist movements erupted. Scholars such as Sayyid Ahmad Khan, Jamalud Deen Al Afghani, Muhammad Abduh, Rashid Ridah, Hassan Al Bannah, Sayyid Qutb, Abul Ala Al Mawdudi were among others who wrote and fought against: Westernization, Democracy, and all Western values that hit on Islamic civilization.
