ISSABAND It is used in many happy occasions. It is a one way of saying congratulations (Kashmiri style, Mubarakh chui and issband goes in kangri). It is believed to ward off evil eye. It originates from Iran and its botanical name is Peganum Harmala. It is called Isfund in Iran and in general Harmal. It is also called Syrian Rue. We burn the seeds in the hot charcoal and its aromatic vapors are believed to ward off evil. It is also used in Afganistan , turkey , Azerbaijan , Iraq , Tajikistan , Uzbekistan. Medicinal uses are Analgesic , anti-inflammatory and its ingredient Harmaline is believed to have anti-depressant properties. I guess using it in marriage or other festive ceremonies was to insure that all the people participating were in a state of elevated/joyous mood...
