ISSUE THREE in the Independent of Saturdays article is about the eThekwini bus service. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE eTHEKWINI BUS SERVICE? Durbans beleaguered bus service has been in the news for several years - and STILL there is no finality on how it will operate. The bus service is being run by Transnat on a month-to-month contract. However, recent talks are that the city wants to take back the buses. The bus woes began in 2002 when the eThekwini transport department opted to privatize the service, and REMANT ALTON Land Transport bought the buses for R70 million. In 2009, with complaints by drivers that they were not being paid proper salaries, REMANT ALTON declared they were in financial trouble and pulled out of the deal. The municipality paid R405 million to bail out the operation. In July, the city announced it had earmarked R210 million to establish an in-house bus entity in the 2014/2015 financial year and asked the public to comment on what type of service they needed. Since that announcement, nothing is known about the future of the bus service. eThekwini Municipality did not respond to queries for an update.
