ISU Scuba Fall Dive Trip Information Mermet Springs Quarry October 12th & 13th, 2013 Join ISU Scuba for our fall dive trip and open water checkouts at Mermet Springs. We will have a great group of divers converging in Southern Illinois to enjoy one last weekend of diving before the cold sets in. Mermet Springs is a great location for both fun diving and training. The water will still be relatively warm and should be exceptionally clear. The current visibility is up to 25 feet in the shallows and even better at depth. There is also plenty to see in the quarry including paddle fish, a school bus, train car, ambulance, and Boeing 727. Below you will find a few details to make trip planning a bit easier. Location Information Mermet Springs Dive Quarry Web: mermetsprings/ Phone: (618) 527-DIVE (3483) Directions: Mermet Springs is approximately 12 miles north of the town of Metropolis, 10 miles south of town of Vienna and 1 mile North of Mermet on the West side of US HWY 45. If you are using a GPS the coordinates are: N 37 17.067, W 088 51.466. Amenities on site: Dive shop, Snack Shack (burgers, fries, etc.), pavilions with gear stands, rest rooms, showers, and changing rooms. Accommodations Camping: Mermet Springs – RV Camping ($20 per night) & Tent Camping ($5 per night) Metropolis Hotels (with Mermet Springs rates): Holiday Inn Express, Metropolis, IL – (618) 524-8899 Baymont Inn and Suites – (618) 524-5678 Super 8 – (618) 524-8200 Metropolis Inn – (618) 524-3723 Costs Gear Rental (from Southern Indiana Scuba) for the Weekend - $99 Daily Entrance Fees - $20 for divers, $5 for non-divers Air Fills - $7 Nitrox Fills (if EAN certified) - $12 Mermet Springs Check-in Procedures Before you can enter the quarry, you must check in at the front office. Let them know you are with the Indiana State University/Southern Indiana Scuba group. They will ask you to fill out liability paperwork and hold your certification card for the weekend. If you are working toward your open water certification, just let them know that you do not yet have a card. Once you check in at the front office, come find us at the ISU/SIS pavilion. We will help you unload your gear and get you set for the day. Dive Schedule and Course Logistics Fun Divers: Find and buddy and dive as much or as little as you like. It is that simple. Open Water Checkouts: We will begin diving around 10 AM on Saturday morning. In order to complete the open water training, you will do four checkout dives. We plan to do three checkout dives on Saturday and one on Sunday. This will give you time to do a dive or two on Sunday after you are certified if you wish. Advanced Open Water Checkouts: In order to finish the advanced open water certification students must complete a series of five adventure dives including a deep dive and navigation dive. We will begin the first advanced dive around 9 AM on Saturday morning. The goal is to complete three adventure dives on Saturday and two on Sunday. Remember you must pre-register and pay for the Advanced Open Water Course through Rec Sports prior to the trip. The cost for the course is $130.
