IT CAME IN TODAY...from author Janice Tracy, posted with the other reviews on Amazon. Janice is a fellow writer, with roots in Mississippi, and I met her at her recent book signing in Yazoo City, where we swapped books. My book is about a small town preacher who did good. Her book, The Juke Joint King of the Mississippi Hills: The Reign of Tillman Branch is about a small town bootlegger who did rather badly. The review Janice Tracy wrote about my story of the small town preacher is here: Fisher of Men: The Motorcycle Ministry of Herb Shreve is the story of an Arkansas preacher called by God to minister to motorcyclists in the 1970s who were in dire need of guidance and spiritual direction. The organization that Shreve founded lives on today and is known in the U.S. and worldwide as the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA.) Written by Arkansas resident and former Mississippian, Gene Harlan Powell, an active and involved member of the CMA, the book is classified as a biography and an autobiography, since the authors personal friendship with Shreve allowed him the opportunity to include many details of Shreves life and ministry that were provided by the subject himself. In Fisher of Men, Powell combines the common denonimators of a strong spiritual background and an intense love of motorcycling, with a sincere belief that Heber Earl (Herb) Shreves lifes story was significant and needed to be written for posterity. The authors storytelling and writing skills are impeccable and cause the reader to feel as if he/she is engaging in a personal conversation with Powell himself. The authors unique descriptive ability with words allows a reader to imagine the scenes in the book as if they were taking place at the moment. In this moving story of a conventional man who began an unconventional ministry, Powell has written with honesty, integrity, and with the pride of knowing and riding with the man who Rode for the Son who left a lasting impact on his own life. I highly recommend Powells book to everyone, but particularly to those who believe the lives of all people everywhere are important and who truly believe in the power of the Almighty.
