IT HAD BEEN RAINING on and off all day, leaving the creeks flowing like little rivers, and every ditch line full of water! it was this night, I had the great fortune of meeting Cheryl! it was about 2:AM when a fellow officer made a traffic stop near the Baxter County Fairgrounds. I was patrolling the other side of town, but I stopped what I was doing, and headed to back up my buddy. when I arrived at his location, he was in the process of submitting field sobriety tests to a male subject. shortly thereafter, he placed the male under arrest for alleged DWI. he asked me to check on the female passenger, and we both decided if she was ok, I would let her drive home. my buddy left the area, enroute to the station with the male, to offer him a breath test. it started raining again as I made my initial contact with Cheryl. I introduced myself, and explained to her she was not in trouble, etc., I just wanted to make sure she was sober enough to drive home. I showed her a pbt (portable breath test), and kindly requested a breath sample, ... simple enough, right? she went berserk!!! screaming and cursing, she started running away in the down pour of rain! I caught her next to the old CASEY HOUSE / we went into the water filled ditch, rolling around like hogs in the mud! she was biting me, screaming obscenities, kicking, spitting, she was NUTS!! I could not hurt her, I was just trying to get her a ride home, but it was too late now! I had a wet and angry wildcat on my hands!! in and out of the ditch we rolled for several minutes. I finally managed to gain control, so I escorted this soaked and slippery female to the rear seat of my unit, still kicking and screaming! I notified the jail to have the room ready. at the jail, it took 4 of us to put her in the tank. fun night.
