IT HAS BEEN OVER thirty-three years since Marcel Broodthaers died in Cologne on January 28, 1976; he died on his birthday, aged fifty-two, like William Shakespeare who also died on his birthday at the same age, some three hundred and sixty years earlier. Such a twist of fate as this is a chance reminder of Broodthaers’s wide knowledge and enthusiasm for literature and his love of Shakespeare’s work in particular, which led him, together with his wife Maria, to name their only daughter Marie-Puck, the name being inspired by a character from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His ability to rework the language of art and merge different artistic disciplines have made Marcel Broodthaers (Brussels, 1924 - Cologne, 1976), one of the key artists of the twentieth century, with a body of work that includes writing, film, the production of objects and graphic work. Based on Marxist analysis and structuralist theories of language, all of his artistic practice revolves around the reflection on art and the role of museums as institutions. Broodthaers freely incorporates language errors and turns of phrases, classic literary authors, objects from everyday life and natural elements into his work. Cat: Miaaw..miaaw..miiaw..miaw. MB: Are you sure it’s not a new form of academicism? Cat: Miauw. MB: Yes, but if it’s a daring innovation it’s still a contestable one. Cat: Miaw. MB: It’s still… Cat: Miaw. MB: Er…It’s still a matter of markets… Cat: Miaauw. MB: What will the people who bought the previous things do? Cat: Miauw. MB: Will they sell them? Cat: Miiauw..mia. MB: Or will they continue? What do you think?…Because, at the moment, a lot of artists are wondering about that. Cat: Miaauw.. mm..mii..miauw.. maaw..miaauw.. miaw..mm.. Miauw..miauw.. MiAUW!
