IT IS GOOD TO DO GOOD ON THE SABBATH DAY “… And they asked Him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath days? That they might accuse Him. And He said unto them, what man shall there among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the Sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath days…” Matthew 12:9-14 “Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the Seventh days to do good or to do evil? To save life, or to destroy it? And looking round about upon them all, He said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And He did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.” Luke 6:9-10 It is good to do good and to save life on the Sabbath days. The Pharisees tried to accuse Jesus of breaking the Sabbath because they did not understand the original purpose of the Sabbath; and as such they added their own rules and doctrines to it. Let no man judge you about the Sabbath using commandments and doctrines of men. God will use only His law to judge us. The Sabbath was given as a gift or a blessing to mankind and not as a burden. Since the Sabbath was made for man, it means that it should be a blessing to him at all times, whether in sickness or in need of help. That is the reason Jesus said, it is good to save life on the Sabbath so that it remains a blessing to man. If life is not saved on the Sabbath because of resting, then it ceases to be a blessing to man; and the meaning of the Sabbath being made for man changes to man being made for the Sabbath. Which is more important than the other, something made for someone or someone for which that thing is made? It is that someone but he should accept what is made for him and show appreciation for it. Jesus the Son of God said that it is good to do well on the Sabbath day. Examples of good things that can be done on the Sabbath day are as follows: 1. Worshipping God, Praying and Fellowshipping in the Name of Jesus Christ. 2. Teaching, Preaching and Evangelizing. “and came down to Caper’na-um, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath days. And they were astonished at His doctrine: for His Word was with power.” Luke 4:31-32 “And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.” Luke 13:10 Read Luke 4:16 and I Peter 2:21. “And when the Sabbath day was come, He began to teach in the synagogue.” Mark 6:2 “And He marveled because of their unbelief. And He went round about the villages, teaching.” Mark 6:6 3. Using gifts of the Holy Spirit e.g. Healing, Miracles. “And He could there do no might work, save that He laid His hands upon s few folk, and healed them.” Mark 6:5 Read Matt 12:9-14. 4. Saving life. Read Luke 10:25-37 about the Good Samaritan. Be a Good Samaritan always even on the Sabbath day. It is good to save life on the Sabbath day. **Matthew 12:7. 5. Setting free. “And ought not this woman, being a dauughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?” Luke 13:16 6. Fasting. “Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was afterward ahungered.” Matthew 4:1-2 Jesus was alone in the wilderness fasting for forty days and forty nights. Of course, among these days were Sabbath days. So it is lawful to fast on the Sabbath day. Jews used to circumcise even on the Sabbath days. John 7:22-24 God told us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. This should be done always, everyday without exception. “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” I John 3:18 If on the Sabbath day you do not save life when need is there, then you have transgressed against the commandments and law of God. We should keep the commandments and law of God everyday. God did not say that we should love our neighbors only in six days. We are to do the work and will of God on the Seventh day and on the other six days. “… And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work; in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day. The Lord then answered him, and said Thou hypocrite, doth not even one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?…” Luke 13:10-17 The ruler of the synagogue accused Jesus of breaking the Sabbath rest because he did not understand the kind of resting. He even said there are six days men ought to work and in these six days that is when people were supposed to be healed. The Bible says in six days men ought to do their personal labors and on the Seventh day they should rest from doing their personal labors. Personal labors differ from person to person. God rested from His personal work. We are not supposed to rest from our personal work and also from God’s work. This ruler combined the two. We are supposed to rest from our personal work while we are doing God’s work. God did not forbid us from doing His work in the six days in which we do our personal work. God’s work should be done daily. Righteousness and holiness should be all the time, everyday, not only on the Sabbath day since the Bible says, Be ye Holy.
