IT IS THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN... BLACK BELTS BIG BUCK PHOTO CONTEST IS GOING HOG WILD THIS YEAR!! What better way to celebrate your trophy buck than to earn the admiration of fellow deer hunters and take home a great award? The Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association’s annual “Big Buck” Photo Contest officially gets under way this week with the start of bow season, and the top winner will take away our biggest prize ever – worth $600. The grand prize? A Hog Wild Blowout – a hog-hunting trip for two at Great Southern Outdoors Wildlife Plantation in the heart of the Black Belt, valued at $500, plus a $100 gift card to Bass Pro Shops. “This is without a doubt our best prize ever for the Big Buck Photo Contest, and we thank Black Belt Land and Realty, LLC and Great Southern Outdoors Plantation for making it possible,” says Pam Swanner, project director for the Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association. “Our photo contest is a great way to kick off deer season in the Black Belt, which, of course, is the best place to hunt in the South, if not the entire nation.” For the southern half of Alabama, including most of the Black Belt, bow season begins Saturday, Oct. 25. Gun season starts Nov. 22. Called a “hunter’s paradise” by Buckmasters founder Jackie Bushman, Alabama’s Black Belt gets its name from its dark, rich soil, which produces vegetation that makes for ideal habitat for wild game, especially deer. The region is home to more than 50 hunting and fishing lodges. The Big Buck Photo Contest is open to any hunter who bags his or her trophy deer in any of the 23 counties (stretching across the state’s midsection) that comprise the Black Belt. Those counties are Barbour, Bullock, Butler, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Crenshaw, Dallas, Greene, Hale, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Monroe, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Pike, Russell, Sumter, Tuscaloosa and Wilcox. Awards will be given in three age categories: 13 and under, 14-17, and 18 and up. Each category winner will receive a $100 gift card to Bass Pro Shops. And, of course, the grand prize winner will also receive the hog-hunting trip for two at Great Southern Outdoors. Deer season, which normally ends Jan. 31, has been extended to Feb. 10, 2015, in many counties in the southern part of Alabama. Entries in the Big Buck Photo Contest will be accepted through Feb. 23, 2015. Entrants should include their name and the county in which the deer was taken. Entries must be from the current hunting season. Photos will be posted on the Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association’s Facebook page, and the number of “likes” they receive will determine the winners.
