IT was a busy three days in Pitch & Putt last weekend, most of it centred around the Deerpark club with the club picking up another National title in its 40th anniversary year. After going close the last time they entered the event, Damien Fleming and Mary Murphy were crowned National Mixed Foursomes Champions last Sunday in Lakewood, Co Cork. Rounds of seven and four up respectively were enough to give Damien and Mary victory by one shot in the 36 hole competition with 11up. This makes up for a runners-up finish by the same duo when the competition was hosted in Deerpark back in 2009. Well done to Damien and Mary from all in Kerry Pitch & Putt. Saturday was also a great day for the Killarney club as well. Their Inter/Junior team came from 2-1 down to win their National Inter-Club Quarter-Final match with Bellewstown of Meath in Nenagh by 5-4. Deerpark trailed after the Scotch Foursomes Round but won four of the six singles matches to book their place in the semi-finals against St Patricks of Wexford in Bruff, Co Limerick on Saturday October 26th. Conor McCarthy, Kieran O’Keeffe, James Fleming and team captain Ger O’Connor secured the points in the Singles matches to send them into the last four on the October Bank Holiday weekend. Last Friday saw four Killarney schools advance from the Munster Schools qualifiers to the Finals in Nenagh on Friday October 11th next. They were three of the teams from St Brendans College along with a team from Killarney Community College with the third team from the Sem just edging out Listowel Community College by two shots for the final spot. The three St Brendans College teams were (i) Creagh Courtney, Jason O’Brien & Michael Cronin, (ii) Jason O’Sullivan, David Harnett & Sean Courtney and (iii) Finbarr Murphy, Mark Harnett & Jack O’Connor. The Killarney Community College team which qualified is Conor and Stephen McCarthy along with Kieran Fitzpatrick. While there is no county fixture this weekend, it is a big day on Saturday for Damien Fleming as he ties the knot with his fiancée Sharon.
