ITS FRIDAY!!! No matter what find a reason to laugh today, tomorrow and everyday! Laughter releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins, immunity-boosting substances called neuropeptides and natural pain killers into the body. As a result, laughter helps improve mood, decrease pain and enhance the body’s ability to fight infections. The physical reaction of laughing can cause blood vessels to expand and relax, increasing blood flow throughout the body. In turn, more oxygen is delivered to the organs. The contraction of blood vessels also can help decrease the chance of developing atherosclerosis, or plaque build-up, on the vessels. Decreasing plaque reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke or peripheral artery disease. Provoked laughter can induce some of the same physiological effects as exercising. This does not mean laughter can take the place of exercise, but the addition of 15 minutes of daily laughter enhances both mood and health. If you are having a bad day, force yourself to laugh at something like a silly joke or memory, laugh with your kids. Try reading a fun book or watching a humorous TV show or movie. Better yet, tell someone else a joke. Making other people laugh may help boost your self-esteem, and their laughter may reflect onto you. As you may have experienced, humor can be infectious just like the domino-effect of yawns.
