ITS SIMPLE AS 1 - 2 - 3....... Basically, SAFETY is as simple as 1-2-3. 1. Know the job 2. Spot or identify the hazards. 3. Keep your mind on the job. But there are some people who say that safety rules and practices complicate the job. They slow down production and even, in some cases, border on the the ridiculous. Well, maybe sometimes. But lets examine those charges and then make an honest appeal of them. Does safety really complicate the job? If you were an airplane pilot, for example, you would be required to first file a flight plan. This is primarily a safety precaution, but it does take time and effort. Before take off you would be required to obtain permission from the control tower. Numerous instrument checks must be made. Now these thing do add some degree of complication to the job. The space industry observes many long hours of countdown, while astronauts and mission control run thousands of checks to assure that everything is operable and safe for blast off. This too, complicates the job. But how complicated is to stop for a STOP sign... To place a LOCK on a switch... to put a DO NOT OPERATE tag on a valve... to check if the line is properly ISOLATED, DRAINED ????? No doubt about it, safety procedures slow down a job 20 or 30 minutes. To install welding shields or fire blankets around the hot work area, for instance, may add as much 30 minutes to do the job... 30 minutes that could be used in productive work. But whats s the other side of the story? By skipping safety considerations, you save 10, 20 minutes today, 30 minutes tomorrow, perhaps several hours, and this go on for sometime. Then there is an Accident. The entire crew, department, supervisors, the safety people and others spend days investigating the the accident and filing of reports. And the most important thing is that a skilled worker maybe out of production for a long time or maybe OUT FOREVER!!!!! It is true that sometimes there maybe a tendency to overdo... to bottle things up with so many rules and regulations that it does border on the ridiculous. But that is the exception rather than the rule. YOU CANT OVERDO SAFETY! (nccer#10496016) anr.nccer.org/ov
