ITS WAISAK 2104! On the evening of the full moon, tonight, May 15th, Buddhists in Indonesia celebrate the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha. In Bali, Waisak is mainly celebrated at small number of Buddhist ashrams on the island. However, Indonesias main festival is held on the grounds of Borobodur, the largest Buddhist monument in existence (and one of the ten wonders of the world!) which took 100 years and three generations of men to build over the 9th century AD. Located in central Java close to Yogyakarta, Borobodur is one of the most incredible places on earth – a must see for visitors to Indonesia at any time of the year. The holiness of this site is particularly apparent during this Buddhist ritual. On Hari Raya Waisak, hundreds of monks in saffron robes carrying offerings of flowers and candles join a five-mile pilgrimage from Mendut temple to the serene Buddha who is seated atop Borobodur. As the moon rises over the horizon it throws white light onto the smooth stone exterior of the ancient temple. Hundreds of candles are lit and the monks begin praying, meditating and chanting well into the evening, a vision guaranteed to remain with you forever. In 2012 there was a major ceremony on Borobudur and the photos collected here, come from that day. Blessings from the Buddha................
