IT’S A BOY! We are very excited to announce that our white rhino calf has arrived! Rhino Cynthia gave birth to a healthy male calf on the 11th July! Both mum and calf are doing extremely well with the new arrival already proving to be a handful! Our calf has been given the name ‘Mabaso’ after the head game keeper of our UmPhafa reserve, Siboniso Michael Mabaso, who sadly passed away last month. ‘Michael’ was an instrumental part of UmPhafa, and was utterly dedicated to conservation, this is why we feel it is fitting that the successful breeding of the endangered White Rhino be in memory of him. Mabaso is currently off show whilst he finds his feet but follow us closely over the coming weeks as we introduce him to the outside and of course his soon to be playmate one year old Pembe! This is Colchester Zoo’s third successful white rhino calf and second from a natural breeding making us one of the top breeders for this species and it is hoped this success will continue in the future.
