IT’S been longer than usual since our last issue and in - TopicsExpress

IT’S been longer than usual since our last issue and in apologising for that, I hope you will consider the wait for issue 68 well worthwhile when you see how we’ve given the mag a ‘freshen up’. For the first time since we launched 11 years ago we’ve actually got a proper designer working on the job now, to give it a more professional and neater look. We have also taken the plunge and gone full colour throughout and even though paper costs keep going up, we haven’t passed the extra cost on to you, our loyal and valued readers. But you can all still help us by making EX more viable in another way – simply by persuading a friend or relative, who shares your interest in Hammers’ history, to take out a subscription (see facing page). Apart from saving yourself money on the cover price and having the convenience of having the mag delivered straight to your door, you will also be helping us. What many of you who buy EX from your local newsagent may not realise is that approximately half of our £3.50 cover price from shop sales goes to the retailer/wholesaler – not to us, the publisher. Imagine producing a product and then giving half the revenue from it to a third party. Well, that’s what happens every time we sell a copy through a newsagent. It’s not a case of being greedy – EX has never been a business, it’s really a labour of love – but it would encourage us even more if increased revenues allowed us to continue investing in the title. If the move to full colour results in an increase in sales and, particularly, subscribers, we would seriously look at increasing the frequency to at least six issues a year. Apart from cosmetic changes to the mag, we will also be spending more to advertise it and hopefully attract a wider readership as a result. But we need your help, too. So instead of passing on your copy to a mate after you’ve finished reading it, tell him (in the nicest possible way) to ‘bugger off’ and get his own! Blimey, it’s only £12 a year to subscribe, or £20 for two years (eight issues). What do you get for that nowadays? In terms of our on-sale date, I have to admit that I have been lax in the past and from now on we will ensure that we are on sale on the advertised date. Our next issue will be on sale on December 14. It promises to be a bit special, too, because it will be dominated by part one of a new in-depth interview with Frank Lampard. We have been trying to persuade ‘Old Frank’ to sit down with us for a number of years but, for whatever reason, it has not happened. But recently the West Ham legend finally agreed to our repeated requests and his interview with Tim Crane in issue 69 is not to be missed.
