Ian Murphy-Mitchard, Forever 28, September 21, 1979 to September 27, 2007 Today Ian celebrates his 35th birthday in heaven. One of the most striking things one noticed about our son was the poignant sweetness of his soul. Ian strongly identified with the nations homeless youth and the nomadic, homeless youth culture, The Crusties, who knew him coast to coast as Raindog Murphy. He often spoke about their code of honor and their loyal protection of one another. Ian also believed that one of the most essential outreach functions of homeless shelters that target youth is to provide creative opportunities... “Ian was an advocate for the underdog and he stood up for those who were marginalized,” recalled Ian’s mother, Marilee Murphy-Odendahl. “He was always interested in helping people.” Ian was Marilee Murphy-Odendahlls only child. Since his loss to a heroin overdose, Marilee has become a huge voice in bringing attention to drug overdose awareness and harm reduction. I had the privilege to hear her speak and she is not a force to be reckoned with. I know Ian is proud of his mom and all she is doing for change. Ian will forever be loved and missed, by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, especially by his mother. Ian will ALWAYS be loved and he will NEVER be forgotten. Remember this traveler today. Say his name Ian or Raindog Murphy. Do an act of kindness for someone who is homeless, light a candle or send his mom Marilee a little note or graphic. I will have a candle lit in Ians memory. Love you Marilee, Margaret
