Ian Woods statement yesterday is interesting. As he admitted last - TopicsExpress

Ian Woods statement yesterday is interesting. As he admitted last night on the BBC, he timed it to coincide with his expressing his support for maintaining the Union. When asked why he was supporting the No campaign he said that he felt that dealing with a bigger government was good for the oil industry. What should the people of Scotland make of that? The oil industry does not make the oil. The oil is there already and these companies simply extract it and seek to maximise their own profit in doing so. But maximising the profits of the oil industry is not the same as seeking the best interests of the people of Scotland. Norways petroleum fund was set up in 1990 and will be worth $1 trillion by 2020, just 30 years later. So, even if we only have 35 years worth of high oil production left, an independent Scotland could still have a huge fund to pass on to our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Why is that bad news? Of course Wood is just one of many experts to pontificate on how much oil is left. His statement yesterday was high on scare but he has not outlined his methodology and those interviewing him last night were certainly not asking him how did you come by your estimates? I am also suspicious of the glee with which his statement is greeted by unionist campaigners. After all, they believe it is British oil. Why are they all so delighted to learn that such a valuable resource will soon be lost to the Union they love so much? Get used to much more of this stuff before September 18th.
