Ians life journey on Saturday 24th January 2015 i.e. yesterday, I received a text message informing me that there is a funeral prayer for a new Muslim called Ian who passed away on Friday in Da rAl ulum Mosque mosque in Longsight in Manchester. I decided to go taking a bus although the time was not enough to catch the Dhuhr prayer at 13.00. However, the bus came late and I took it. By the time I reached the mosque, I found them they have finished the congregation prayer but I made another congregation prayer and as I asked two Brothers to do Iqama I was surprised they could not do, then I had to do it and lead the prayer. By the time I finished, they announced the start of the funeral prayer. The Iman explained to the members of the congregation how the funeral prayer (1) which consists of the Imam to stand in front of the body of the deceased person, then He raises his hand and 1st Takbeer i.e. to say Allaahu Akbar followed by Surah Al fatiha 2nd Takbeer i.e. to say Allaahu Akbar followed by salat al muhamedia i.e. sending prayers and blessing on the prophet i 3rd Takbeer i.e. to say Allaahu Akbar followed by Supplication for the deceased person 4th Takbeer i.e. to say Allaahu Akbar followed by Supplication for the deceased people, everybody and yourself end with Salaam like we end the daily prayers (for more details see (2)) Masha Allah, many brothers attended Ians funeral prayers. Then, we moved the body Manchester south cemetery where the grave was already dug. The body arrived and it was carried by the brothers from the funeral service van to the grave place. Then the brothers help to turn his body towards the Qibla by making the body to rest on its right side. Then, before the body was lowered, I gave a reminder about death and how lucky Ian was as he accepted few months ago and I prayed to Allah (SWT) that he make us to die as Muslims. The body was lowered in the grave and covered with sand. A brother reminded me to say few words and prayers what happen to the deceased person in the grave. I started by saying our journey is divided in three stages: 1.This earthly life . 2. Life of the grave and last but not least the day of judgement. A reminded them about death as it is our destination and the grave is our final abode in this life. It was important that three things comes with the dead person i.e his wealth, family and actions and only his actions he will take with him. Then, I reminded them about life in the grave and how an angel will come and ask the dead person three questions: The two angels who are charged with questioning come to him and ask him what he used to believe in this world. Questions(3) are: · Who was his Lord? · What was his religion? · Who is this man who was sent among you? If he gives a good answer i.e Allah, Islam and Muhammed (PBUH) , that is good, but if he does not answer them they inflict a severe and painful beating on him. It is why recommended the following dua three times in both morning and evening : رَضِيتُ باللهِ رَبَّاً، وَبِالْإِسْلَامِ دِيناً، وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ صَلَى اللهُ عَلِيهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَبِيَّاً “I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion and with Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as my Prophet.(4) The Hadiths of this Supplication There is no Muslim servant who says in the morning and the evening three times: “I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion and with Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as my Prophet, except that it will be a right upon Allah to please him on the Day od Judgment. (Ahmad)**** If he was one of the righteous, angels with white faces come to him, but if he was one of the evildoers, angels with dark faces come to him. This is the fitnah or tribulation that he suffers. I reminded everyody that nothing will benefit the dead person except three things Then, supplication were made for Ians and everybody left. During the burial, I met Br. Javed who was Ians friend almost 40 years and he spoke about Ians life journey. He told that he met when he was working as a bus driver and he needed a bus conductor replacement, this is the time he met Ian. He said to me that Ian was 65 years old and he worked in the army for almost 12 years as an electrician before he became a bus conductor. He told me that he knew well and he used to come to visit so often until he became ill and he had his kidney removed and he need dialysis. Then he was diagnosed with a lung cancer, however Ian accepted Islam only 8 months ago and lived with him and his wife until he was moved to a nursing. I had a chance to meet his older brother as well as his partner for 30 years. Both his brother and partner were very pleased with the funeral ceremony and the prayers done on the soul of brother Ian who we pray to Allah to shower his soul with his mercy, forgiveness, blessings and grant Al firdous in paradise. I also explained to his next kin which was his partner that how to dispose of his assets and belonging according to Islam which is briefly paid for his funeral (this was done by Br. Jawed and his wife), pay his debt, donate his belonging and if he has assets she should donate make one third as an endowment and the rest should be divided according to Islamic inheritance law. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: When a person dies, all his deeds come to an end except three: sadaqah jaariyah (ongoing charity, e.g. a waqf or endowment), beneficial knowledge (which he has left behind), or a righteous child who will pray for him. (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, no 1376; he said this is a saheeh hasan hadeeth) This reminded that everyone of us should make his will especially hose who reverted to Islam so that funeral service and inheritance should be made according to Islam. Finally, are there any signs that indicate that a person’s life ended well?. A good end means when a person was guided before his death to keep away from that which angers the Lord and to repent from sin, and to focus on doing acts of worship and good deeds, and then he died in this good state. One of the indications of this is the authentic hadeeth narrated from Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When Allaah wills good for His slave, He uses him.” They said, “How does He use him?” He said, “He guides him to do good deeds before he dies.” Narrated by Imam Ahmad, 11625; al-Tirmidhi, 2142; as authenticated by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 1334. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When Allaah wills good for His slave, He sweetens him.” He was asked, “What is this sweetening?” He said, “Allah guides him to do righteous deeds before he dies, then He takes (his soul) whilst he is in that state.” Narrated by Ahmad, 17330; classed as authenticated by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 1114. There are signs of a good end, some of which are seen by the dying person as he is dying, and some which may be visible to other people. Ians life journey ended by him accepting Islam and we pray to Allah (SWT) make die in state of Islam. Allahumma inna nas’aluka Husna Al Khatima.
