Ians status: Where to begin . . . Ians condition briefly - TopicsExpress

Ians status: Where to begin . . . Ians condition briefly worsened, which took him to the ICU. Scott, Lee, Danielle, and I spent Saturday in San Jose, first the ICU at his rehabilitation hospital, then at the Santa Clara Kaiser ICU where he was later transferred. The fact that his docs allowed a transfer, speaks to how much better hes doing. Because every transfer is hard on him on many levels, wed like to keep that to a minimum. However, he has one more hospital transfer to make -- to Sacramento Kaiser -- and that could be later today. It will be great to have Ian in Sacramento; much more because we can see him daily than because we wont have to make the 300 mile round-trip drive. Ian has the doctors stumped: He has either infection or inflammation in his lungs. They assume it is caused by aspiration, but arent sure. Ian is once again intubated, but he is pretty much breathing on his own. In order to tolerate the intubation he is sedated. Weve been greatly frustrated on this journey by a couple of recurring issues with the various medical teams. First, the Attendings and Residents invariably believe that they can handle Ians very complicated and tricky endocrine issues without consulting an endocrinologist ... they cant! Second, they are reluctant to believe FACTS that we know to be true about Ians physiology. Each time he gets transferred to a new team -- one hospital to another or even one unit to another -- we have to re-establish our position on these issues. His move to Sacramento Kaiser ICU will be his 8th move. Once again, folks ... be prepared to advocate on your own or someone elses behalf! My Warrior Sons journey is much harder than ours, and hes all in. So, we can do no less.
