Ice chips, milestones and Player of the Week as Stefan Meyer of Braehead Clan picks up the award, a second on the trot for Clan after Kyle Jones last week. . Ice Chips Week 7 . Welcome to our week 7 update - a week that saw Braehead Clan take top spot in the regular season standings for the first time in their history and saw Belfast Giants qualify for the 3rd round of the Continental Cup. Starting point this week was a couple of Wednesday night games with Braehead v Nottingham first up. The difference maker in this one was Clan’s powerplay unit as they scored all four of the goals that saw the home side win 4-3 in overtime. A couple of 5 on 3’s were included in that with Neil Trimm firing in the game winner 46 seconds into overtime. Sheffield were in home action against Dundee and although John Mitchell silenced the home crowd after only 22 seconds and Stars led 2-1 at the first break it was a 3-1 second period for the hosts that set them to an eventual 6-3 victory. A 1+3 night for skipper Jonathan Phillips led the scoring. Coventry had a n early weekend in Scotland and started it off on Friday in Kirkcaldy. Always a tight contest this one with messrs Regan and Stewart in good form between the pipes. James Griffin had Blaze ahead until the 51st minute when Bobby Chaumont took the game into overtime but it was Rory Rawlyk who fired in the game winner on the powerplay at 63.35 to give the Blaze road trip the perfect start. Blaze travelled west to take on Braehead in the live Premier Sports game on Saturday and this time came up short as Ryan Finnerty’s men hit the summit of the standings with a 4-2 win. For the second game in succession a double by Stefan Meyer saw Clan overcome a loose opening period to grind out the win. Two good sides in action in this one and a decent contest for the TV viewers. At the seventh attempt this season Hull picked up their first home win. David Brown made 21 saves as a below-strength Edinburgh were blanked 2-0. Cory Tanaka picked up the game winner in the 16th minute but it was a heroic display by Tomas Hiadlovsky in the Edinburgh goal as he turned away 55 of 57 shots as Stingrays laid siege. Nottingham took on Dundee at the NIC and in a feisty encounter comfortably handed Stars their fourth loss on the bounce. David Clarke led the way with 2+1 with Rob Ricci only ending Craig Kowalski’s shut out hopes in the 53rd minute. Another action packed game between Sheffield and Cardiff ended Saturday nights entertainment. A total of 117 penalty minutes were called by refs Hicks and Hansen and as Steelers won 5-3 there was the unusual sight of a penalty goal being awarded to Steelers Mathieu Roy in the final minute after he was hauled down skating in on the empty net. It was Cardiff v Sheffield again on Sunday, this one in Wales and this time it was Devils who came out on top by 5-2. Missing the suspended Trevor Hendrikx, Devils built a 3-0 lead after two periods and were never in any real danger after that. Doubles for Brent Walton and Jake Morissette for Andrew Lord’s men led the way. Coventry edged Edinburgh 3-2 at the Skydome after a mammoth penalty shootout that saw 8 shots missed by each side before Jereme Tendler finally found a way to beat Tomas Hiadlovsky with shot 17. Another brave effort by the depleted Capitals however, with at least a point to show for their determination and a first professional point for Kyle Flemington with an assist on his sides opening goal. Old rivals Dundee and Fife were in action at the Tayside rink and the home sides’ woes continued as their losing run extended to five games as Flyers skated to a 5-3 win. Although Rob Ricci grabbed a double for the hosts it was five different goal scorers for Todd Dutiaume’s man, with a shorthanded goal by skipper Kyle Haines proving to be the game winner in the 58th minute. Hull entertained Nottingham in the only Challenge Cup game over the weekend and Panthers 3-2 win in overtime secured their place in the quarter finals. David Brown was again in fine form between the home pipes and made 46 saves but he was unable to prevent a goal at 62.52 by Nathan Robinson giving the visitors the extra point. Finally this week we are up to date with last night (Tuesday’s) league game between Nottingham and Edinburgh. A long trip for below strength Capitals and in the end nothing to show for it as Panthers won 5-2. Evan Mosey led the way with a double but it was youngster Jordan Cownie who scored what turned out to be the game winner with his first ever Elite League goal in the 33rd minute. MILESTONES Jonathan Phillips of Sheffield scored his 400th EIHL point in all competitions v Dundee on Wednesday Danny Stewart of Fife dressed in his 500th game in all EIHL competitions v Coventry on Friday (being only the second ever import to hit the 500 milestone). Jereme Tendler of Coventry scored his 200th EIHL point in all competitions @ Fife on Friday. Nottingham’s 2nd goal @ Braehead on Wednesday was their 1000th goal on the road in EIHL league games. Sheffield’s 2nd goal v Dundee on Wednesday was their 2500th goal in all EIHL competitions. Coventry recorded their 400th win in all EIHL competitions @ Fife on Friday. PLAYER OF THE WEEK Player of the Week this time around goes to a player who got into his stride in a big way over his sides two games this week. Scoring 2+1 v Nottingham in a 4-3 overtime win and adding 2+0 v Coventry in a 4-2 win that took his side top of the Elite League, we ask Stefan Meyer of Braehead Clan to skate forward and accept his applause.
