Id checked out most of the big ones but, for some reason, it wasnt until later that I delved into the early array of more traditional horror films (if you can call any of Cronenbergs films traditional horror). My favourite of the bunch has got to be psychoplasmic madness of The Brood. Oliver Reed sucks in his stomach as the domineering psychotherapist as he pushes the protagonists wife so far into her disturbed mind that she manifests murderous dwarf-like clones of their daughter - you heard correctly. These Dont Look Now creatures bludgeon anyone who gets close to the daughter or the husband (even a kindergarten murder scene which is deeply disturbing to this day). Cronenbergs body-horror explorations are really taking shape in this little gem. He also creates a brooding winter landscape with lots of his favourite brutalist buildings featuring throughout the film. Cronenberg also admits that the script was heavily inspired by his own hellish divorce. When he says this he means it; his divorce involved religious cults, child possession and kidnapping. His catharsis has created arguably his first classic. Often overshadowed by the more successful Scanners, The Brood holds up damn well and gets a pretty frequent airing for me. Heres Oliver Reed, or should I say daddy, feminising some poor schlub in front of an audience - teach him whos boss Ollie. https://youtube/watch?v=Q6mU7A0a3Mg
