Id go so far as to say that Democrats have it much harder than Republicans, in office, I mean. Democrats have to convince the people, the liberals, that, no, theyd not being sold out, yet they also have to convince businesses, big and small, that, no, theyre not communists who want to nationalize everything and make everyone wards of the state. Democrats have to operate in the same world as the people who decided money was speech, even though Dems have been fighting against that notion for decades and even passed laws that made it clear they didnt think so. Laws that were being weakened and destroyed from the moment they were on the books. Democrats have no choice but to court big money. Wall Street, Hollywood, Silicon Valley. They have little choice but to accept what campaign contributions they can get simply because if they dont, they wont have a chance. They clearly dont want that, and I can tell you that we dont want that either. So, yeah, there are certain concessions that have to be made. But Im watching the dems fighting a pretty bold holding action against some of the most radical elements ever to gain entrance into our houses of legislature, and Im downright nervous about how this is all going to shake out. Come this Autumn, I know there are people who will sit it out. Whether because they just dont give a damn, or because they blame Dems for not being to accomplish more, or because they have no choice but to chase money in order to actually compete with the party that serves the money people wholeheartedly. Republicans did it the other way around, really. They took the side of the corporations and told the people that the corporations side was the place to be and, in good form, the Republicans lined up behind people who were picking their pockets and exploiting their labor and giving them nothing in return. I know why some people would like to vote third party, or not vote. But youre not helping. Youre making it worse. If we get a Dem majority and strive to keep it, we can continue to interject progressive arguments into the system. If Republicans win, we spent too much fighting against their reactionary radicalism than we do actually accomplishing anything worthwhile. Every small step forward weve made in past decades has been when we had a lock on the majority in both houses of congress as well as a Democratic President. To deny this is to deny reality. If you refuse to give this to us, you cant complain that the Democrats arent fighting for you. You didnt even really give them the chance.
