Id like to share a personal note as we close the 2013 - TopicsExpress

Id like to share a personal note as we close the 2013 season... This was my fifth year as part of the Varsity coaching staff here, beginning when my daughter was enrolled in the IB program at EHS. Shes now graduated and off to college, but theyd have to drag me away kicking and screaming to get rid of me, as this is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done in my life. I only wish I could do it on a full-time basis, because my role is limited by what my work schedule allows. I had a pretty dysfunctional childhood... Because of many circumstances, I was moved around a lot and never went to the same high school for longer than a year. When I was young, football provided an outlet for aggression for me, and the comaraderie of being a part of a team / family is something I desperately needed in my life at that time. In many ways, my football memories are among the fondest I have from those days. Having an opportunity to do this now is important to me on a number of different levels... First, its fun and rewarding, it keeps me young, and I couldnt imagine anywhere Id rather be on Friday nights than on the sidelines representing Ram Nation. Second, if I can do or say just one thing that helps one of these kids, whether it be football-related or something going on in their lives, then its my way of giving back and its all worth it, even if neither they nor I even realize it until years from now. I hope in 5 years Ive been able to do that more than once. This was, by far, my favorite year so far, NOT because it was the first winning season Ive been a part of, rather because of the growth, development, and determination this team exhibited in accomplishing greatness out of adversity... I thought about the phrase life imitates art many times throughout this year as I watched the season unfold. As a resident of Edgewood, parent of an alumni, and a member of the coaching staff, I am truly proud and blessed to be a part of the Edgewood High School family, and I am equally proud and thankful to be able to count many of you as my friends and family because of that affiliation. Be well. Karl Collins Assistant Coach / Director of Football Operations Edgewood High School
