Id like to take a moment to address a subject that was broached today. At that point in time, I said little, because the timing and manner did not lend itself to a healthy discussion. We were asked to state our loyalty to *either* the human race, or to the earth - no middle ground, not both/neither, but to pick just one. None of us could do this, and none of us could effectively explain why. At the time my answer was that there is no difference between people and earth - and its still my answer, but Ill try to better explain myself. We are children of the earth - apart of the earth - every bit as natural as the squirrels, grasses, granite, and sea. The minerals that comprise us have been apart of countless other forms on this planet before they became incorporated into our current bodies. In my personal belief, our souls are entwined to this world, the eternally reborn cells of a much larger living entity that encompasses our planet. We are natural - ie: of nature - and to hate ourselves is to hate nature. We have been given some abilities and responsibilities that other children of earth do not get – and yes, many of our species are terribly abusing them. Humans have done vile, terrible things that we might never be able to repair, things that may not only destroy ourselves but also the planet and everything dwelling on it with us. Humans have disrespected nature, violated it, and many have forgotten that we are natural. But we cannot hate our species for the sins of some (or most) – hate begets hate, hate does not heal. Nature needs healing – humans need healing – and we cannot accomplish these things if we cling to resentment and blame. In my heart, I see the ADF as a group of healers, owing loyalty to all creation (not just the earth, not just humans), and embracing everything with love and respect. I am here because I believe that is a path capable of bringing some measure of peace – to our planet, to our communities, to the future of all. I am simply loyal to life, in all of its forms.
