Id rather put money away for my retirement than buy my kids everything they want. Its not my responsibility to give them all the things that I couldnt have when I was a child. I dont owe it to them to help them buy all the cool things that their friends have. I will provide everything they need and a little extra for good measure, but the rest is their problem. It is my responsibility as a parent to provide my children with nutritious food on the table every day. Its my responsibility to provide them with a loving, stable home that isnt consumed with debt or consumerism. Its my responsibility to involve them in extracurricular activities to channel their excess energy positively. Its my responsibility to make sure theyre making their best effort to achieve the best marks that they can at school. Its my responsibility to help them get the best post secondary education that money can buy. I want to help my children to find their values and the value they bring to the world. When Im gone, my kids will inherit whatever I have left over from however much money I saved during their lifetime by not wasting it on silly things. Ill go away knowing that Im leaving everything I owned and worked so hard for in the hands of good people.
