Idaho Student Educates Classmates about Epilepsy BUHL, IDAHO - Shan Ackerman wants more people to learn about epilepsy, a condition she has struggled with her whole life. The Buhl High School student has gone through surgeries, tried different medications and changed her diet. But she hasn’t found long-lasting relief. For her senior project, Shan organized a school assembly Nov. 4 to raise awareness about epilepsy, a brain disorder that causes seizures. “I was scared,” she said Thursday about speaking in front of the whole school. “I was freaked out.” But the presentation was well received, her mother Rhonda Ackerman said. Students clapped and cheered for Shan. Rhonda also saw students saying “hello” and “good job” to her daughter at lunchtime. “They’re really embraced her.” Some students who didn’t understand Shan’s condition are now able to see from her perspective. “It changed their attitude,” Rhonda said. November is Epilepsy Awareness Month, represented by the color purple. Posters are displayed in hallways throughout Buhl High School.
