Idar Oberstein is famous for a few things: the Church in the Rock and the ruined castle with panoramic views and all those steps to get there. Its the birthplace of Bruce Willis, the Gem industry and Spiessbraten--yum. Its also the very first place I visited when we first moved to Germany way back in 2009. We caught the bus because it was our swcond day on the continent and neither of our had our Intl drivers license yet. Yes, I failed it the first time--- all those signs. I remember thinking... people really live here. It was so pretty!! Yesterday I hot a chance to relieve all those memories again because of the jewelry I clipped around my neck: a heavy, silver necklace given to me after a meal at China Dynastie by the owner. After many trips to the second floor of that plaza, I had racked up quite a few pieces by then... an experience that has yet to be duplicated I might add. Everyone elses just tosses a few fortune cookies atop tge bill left on the table. I remember how tickled we were that they spoke perfect German and very few words in English. I remember not remotely being able to recognize A LOT of the dishes on the buffet when I went during lunch, I renember the ticket I got because I didnt understand that blue timer card you place on your dashboard, i remember how sore my mom was after I took her there (shes a trooper) and I remember the pretty bottle of plum wine I also took home, along with the jewelry--- for free!! I have the memories and the jewelry, however, the wine is how you say... kaput. I dont have to tell you the food was delicious, but it was, most likely still is. Walking down memory lane is easy on the knees and a great short trip made better and clearer with pretty bright and shiny objects!!
