Idiom of innovations gets transformed: Five Innovation Scholars selected by Presidents Office under Innovation Scholar In-residence programme How does a nation celebrate innovative sprit among children, informal sector grassroots level farmers and artisans and engineering students ? The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee in yet another step to reinforce the innovative culture in the country, has created a new window of opportunity at Rashtrapati Bhavaqn. The Five innovators, including a school student M. Tenith Aditya, winner of Ignite award by NIF have been selected for `In-Residence’ Innovation Scholar Programme at Rashrapati Bhavan where they will interact with the President Shri Pranab Mukherjee and other senior policy makers, scientists in technology institutes like IITs and regulatory agencies like Bureau of Indian Standards and try to take their ideas forward. Selected by a high-level committee chaired by Mrs.Omita Paul, Secretary to the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 8th, other scholars are Shri Gurmail Singh Dhonsi, of Padampur tehsil in Sri Ganganagar district in Rajasthan, Shri. Dharamveer Singh Kamboj, of Yamunanagar in Haryana (winner of the Presidential Award through NIF) , Ms. Manisha Mohan, of Punjab University, Chandigarh, and Mr. M.B. Avinash, Ph.D. student, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, winner of Gandhian Young Technological innovation award by SRISTI in past and . These scholars will spend a month at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Coinciding with his birthday on December 11th 2013, The President of India had launched an `In-Residence’ Programme for writers, artists and innovation scholars at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Hon’ble President also decided to bestow special attention to the cause of inclusive innovations at different levels in the society. In the meeting with Vice Chancellors of Central Universities he announced that he would like to meet with the grassroots innovators during his visits to the Universities. He will inaugurate the chapters of National Innovation Clubs to motivate the students to search, spread innovations, sense the unmet needs of society and celebrate the creativity at grassroots. Given the need for linking innovations with pedagogy, he will also meet inspired teachers. NIF will follow up with each of the Innovation Fellow after they go back to respective homes to ensure that their ideas continue to be nurtured. The President will interact with them from time to time to inspire them during their stay at Rashtrapati Bhavan. These fellows can also be challenged to address unmet social needs scouted through National Innovation Clubs. Building upon the Honey Bee Network philosophy, the National Innovation Foundation-India (NIF), was setup by Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India as India’s national initiative to support grassroots technological innovations and outstanding traditional knowledge. Its primary aim is to recognize, respect and reward grassroots technological innovators and traditional knowledge experts and support them to build a sustainable value chain. A clear message has been given by the Honourable President that Innovations matter and he expects every institution in the country to give similar importance and respect to the creative people.
