Idolatry Desecrates God Then the Philistines took the ark of God - TopicsExpress

Idolatry Desecrates God Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon and set it by Dagon. 1 Samuel 5:1-2 In 1 Samuel, the people were reaping to their sin. Notice, they took the Ark of God to one of the largest cities on the coast, Ashdod. When they arrived, they brought the Ark of God into the temple of Dagon and set it by Dagon, one of their gods. Now, Dagon was a god of grain and fish. He was half man and half fish. When the Philistines took the Ark of God into their temple, they desecrated the Ark. They were saying, “Our gods are better than your God.” Because they defeated the Hebrews, they thought their gods were better than the God of Israel. They did not know it was God who allowed them to beat Israel. They lost respect for the Ark of the Covenant, because they thought it had no power. The Ark itself had no power. God had the power and the Ark held the things God told them to keep for remembrance. Inside was the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded and the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments (Hebrews 9:3-4), but it could not contain God. We have to remember, these are just objects. God is omnipresent. He cannot be contained. He cannot be held on a Cross. All those things are reminders, but they do not have any power. If we wear crosses and put up images or statues of the Virgin Mary or saints, we become nothing more than idolaters. Just like the Philistines, we desecrate the Lord. Pastor Raul Ries
