If I Were PM-for-24-hours: On matters of social justice, I - TopicsExpress

If I Were PM-for-24-hours: On matters of social justice, I refuse to compromise my positions - regardless of my personal political biases. If I were to be afforded the opportunity of serving in the capacity of Prime Minister of St. Vincent & the Grenadines for one day, I would spend at least half of those 24 hours addressing matters related to social justice. That for me, would constitute a day well spent. On my agenda would be: (1) Action towards the immediate/ speedy resolution of the governments debacle with the estate of Mr. Marcus DeFreitas, his due compensation and the issuance of a letter of apology for inconveniences caused. (2) The issuance of letters of apology/ regret to Mr. Elvis Daniel, Addison Thomas, and Mr. Ken Johnson; offers of compensation for losses incurred for proven periods of unemployment post-elections 2010; and offers of reinstatement where vacancies are currently available as per their qualifications. (3) The immediate resolution of the governments debacle with Mr. Leon Bigger Bigs Samuel. Options should include: Relocation to a site of equal market/ economic value; the states compulsory acquisition of Mr. Samuels property (as per existing laws on such acquisitions); or an official request for an assessment on the possibility of the change of use of the lands in question to a more environmentally friendly activity of comparable economic value (the state to offer technical assistance in this regard). From a personal standpoint, I absolutely abhor the very thought of injustice. I have seen firsthand how a single perceived act of injustice can trigger the most irrational of responses - particularly when it pertains to an individuals livelihood. Unfortunately, there are many such sad stories in my homeland that continue to aggravate the already disastrous political climate. With this sort of precedence, the only progress that we can truly speak about is that which we perceive in our naivety. It is for this reason that my agenda as PM-for-24-hours would be completely aspirational, reconciliatory, and unapologetically non-partisan - not as per general practice. Disclaimer: This is not your usual political commentary - this is a call to order. We must stand for social justice at all costs. Whereas today a perfect stranger might be the victim, tomorrow - God forbid - this sad reality could come knocking at your doorstep.
