If I were born into the nisgaa culture Im confident that Id be a fluent speaker. Being Haisla and not having a fluent speaker in my family, nor somebody willing to teach my generation, rather...is very unfortunate. I move to the valley and Im exposed to such a rich culture, where everything has a nisgaa name, meaning, and/or story - its amazing. And being Haisla and not knowing my real roots is such a disappointment, and my wish is to speak my own language but HOW? Its such a shame. My boss has me researching nisgaa words and commands to use regularly with the children. We also will have 2 elders to teach the language both morning and afternoon - very fortunate, indeed. I am a Haisla woman, yet I speak more Nisgaa than my own language, its not something to be ashamed of, but rather a blessing to know what types of traditions and beliefs our native ancestors have. My little Erica is so lucky to be learning this language at her age, She speaks it so well.
