If I were to choose just one piece of dietary advice that would likely produce the most results for most people with fat loss goals, it would be this: Regain healthy metabolic flexibility (the ability to easily switch between glucose and fatty acids as energy sources) and then find out exactly how your body responds to carbohydrates. Getting back to healthy metabolic flexibility will require most people to eat low carb or cyclical carb for a while, and calories will have to be adequate. (Stress, overtraining, and poor sleep are a few of the other things that can inhibit good metabolic flexibility, but we’re just talking diet here). Then, when energy levels are stable and fat is coming off, some experimentation will be required to find out how you respond to carbs over the long haul. Make ONE small change and give it a month. Six or eight months later (maybe sooner) you will have a very good idea about where you need to be. If lifestyle factors change (more/less exercise, change in sleep patterns/stress), you will likely need to tweak things a bit. This wont be a fat loss miracle, but with some proper exercise, sleep, and stress management, this will be the primary dietary fix that many will people need.
