If Jesus Christ came back and saw whats being done in his name.... hed never stop throwing up. Watched Hannah and Her Sisters again. This is a terrific movie. Some say its Woody Allens best. Ive only seen 5 of his movies and I still go with Annie Hall. But this great stuff. Mixing romantic drama with romantic comedy. Going back and forth between some fairly heavy stuff with Michael Caine and Barbara Hershey to hilarious stuff with Woody Allen in his usual persona. Damn near everything the guy says is a laugh out loud line. His discussion with Hannah after they learn they cant have children. Could you have ruined yourself somehow? Like how? Excessive masterubation? Hey, youre gonna start knockin my hobbies? Jesus... Of course hes not always funny. Theres a number of great scenes, but I think my favorite is when Woody Allen goes into a movie theater as hes depressed about life and contemplating religion, the afterlife, etc. I just needed to put the world back into rational perspective. Cut to the big silly musical number from Duck Soup with the Marx Brothers. Thats a great cut, thats up there with the bone in 2001. :) And with his narration he essentially says Just relax and enjoy life. Its a great moment. Max Von Sydow is my favorite character in this one. As this snobbish artist who talks about watching TV and getting all of modern culture in one sitting. You see the whole culture. Nazis, deodorant salesmen, wrestlers, beauty contests, a talk show..... can you imagine the level of a mind that watches wrestling? Outstanding screenplay that won Allen his 2nd of 3 writing Oscars. Im all about the quotable dialogue and thats something Allen does best. That and he might well have the best women characters in his movies. Always gets great performances in his movies, especially from women. And this cast is great. The titular Hannah and her sisters are fantastic. Mia Farrow Barbara Hershey - criminally underused actress Dianne Wiest - who won Best Supporting Actress Then theres Carrie Fisher, I wish this movie and wish she did way more movies. And you got Michael Caine as this very sad man having an affair with Barbara Hershey. And then you got guys like Sam Waterston and Richard Jenkins in the movie for a scene a piece. Stellar performances all around. Allens a great director, his movies always look great, too. New York City, his movies are like 2 hour long tourism videos. Damn does he make that city look good. Hannah and Her Sisters is a wonderful film. I wouldnt say its a favorite film of mine, but I can stand back and say that its a great film.
