If Tom Hanks is indeed the James Stewart of modern times - TopicsExpress

If Tom Hanks is indeed the James Stewart of modern times then surely Spielberg is his Frank Capra. A director who can tap his inherent good old boy American- ness, taking his every-man charms and putting him up against it. They worked together to bring Band of Brothers and The Pacific to HBO but, almost bizarrely, have only done three films t date as an actor/director combo. That is, potentially, until now. Just this week Hanks was attached to star in a cold war thriller for Dreamworks which Spielberg has been eyeing to direct. As Variety reports, the plot is based on the true story of James Donovan (Hanks), a prominent American attorney enlisted by the CIA during the Cold War to slip behind the iron curtain to negotiate the release of a pilot captured when his U-2 spy plane was shot down over Russia. Spielberg seems to be juggling a number of projects at the moment. Lincoln scribe Tony Kushner has a script in the works for something called The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, but theres also Montezuma, a West Side Story remake and the long gestating Robopocalypse to consider. Not to mention a certain Indiana Jones. Were keen on a Hanks reunion but the fact is Spielberg hasnt made a great non-historical film since War of the Worlds ; and as the western world turns on Russia once more, its not as if this Cold War stuff is going out of fashion. So with all that in mind, well be keeping our fingers tentatively crossed that something different comes first.
