If a contemporary youth began to give away his possessions...we might see it as a sign of potential suicide. Yet in an initiatory culture, this is not a signal of quitting life altogether; rather, it marks the beginning of a ritual departure, a small death that will increase the youths life. .... A youth who empties the child-world of himself leaves it for the children who remain. If he gives to those who are coming behind, then a link between generations begins to be made. Now, it seems more common for men to hold onto childhood toys and keep remnants of boyhood as if trying to remain in that realm. - Michael Meade, Men and the Water of Life: Initiation and the Tempering of Men (1993)
