If a person could buy a $10K car that would get them from point A to point B perfectly fine, then why do they desire a $100K car? Because they believe it represents that they are a better person or more successful person than the person with the cheaper car. They want to show off the car to their peers, to make them jealous, to be seen as big. All of that being better is entirely superficial and illusory. Same with the big house, or the couture purse, or the giant yacht. What if everyone had a yacht? Then the wealthy person could no longer believe they were inherently better. They would need to find some other way to appease their ego problem.
