If an Amish person leaves, a place is still set for them at the table for each meal. I think that however one looks at it, people derive a sense of the poetic from their religion. I suppose one could go further with it, be more specific: one develops a sensibility about the irrational, a sense of what it is to have traditions... it seems to me that although these people chose to leave they derived some benefits from growing up that way, and some people said as much. Bundling. The coolest custom to ever exist in the entire history of the world. What it means is, if you are single and want to date but it is cold out, your prospective husband comes to your house and you snuggle up in bed and talk. No, really. I swear!!! You dont do anything except talk. I am unclear what happens if one of you falls asleep. Oh- but the snuggling part is just with the blankets, not with each other. But you can be in the same bed. Seriously. That is a cold weather date. And remember, Amish women do not wear makeup. I am not sure how life can be any easier. I mean, ... and they wear uniforms ( dresses and aprons and a bonnet). So all you have to do to date is nothing, and then you can get in bed and talk, and through this ridiculously easy process you can wind up with a decent guy with a job who can never leave you. Compare it to what the process American women have to deal with, cosmetically and in every other way. Things like new clothes and sealing the deal and birth control. I am kind of clear on which is preferable.
