If any more proof were needed that authenticity beats hype in todays market, look at Michelle Phan. A waitress who couldnt get a job at a beauty counter for lack of experience in 2007. A multi-millionaire with 700,000 followers and a contract with LOreal in 2014. Phan saw her peers at college addicted to YouTube and decided to apply her make-up expertise there. Although her camera was often shaky, her presentation was rock solid. She gained credibility with a huge audience and the respect of marketers of cosmetics. The problem, as I foresee it, is: at what point does she stop being a real person and start being a corporate shill? No amount of make-up can make you appear genuine forever. recode.net/2014/10/27/michelle-phan-youtube-star-to-startup-founder/
