If anything has been primal in my upbringing besides my Nanis (maternal grandmother) virah-geet , the songs gopis sing when Krishna leaves Vrindavan , its Bulleh Shah and Heer-Ranjha , as my fathers family came from Jhang, where Heer was from, her Syal clan. I can feel it in my bones , the open fields of Punjab , the Chenab . And the sophistication of Lahore where my mother is from. She till today has great friends in Lahore and they come here and my mother and friends go to Pakistan to attend marriages and they keep a separate kitchen for vegetarians . I grew up on Pakistani serials and we Punjabis bond like lost brothers and sisters when we meet in Dubai,London or New York . When Yash Chopra uses Urdu shairi in Kabhie Kabhie or Silsila or makes a Veer-Zara ar Fanah , its coming from that soil. Funny that Hindustani cinema has the two communities who were most deeply affected by partition , Punjabis and Bengalis in large numbers . And also Sindhis who lost everything . The trauma of the largest forced human immigration in history of anything upto 15 million lives on . It lives on in me as the eldest son who heard infinite times from my father and my other relatives , both men and women the painful personal narratives . And the only possibility of communication and communion is Ishq e Haqiqi , but who understands the spiritual world within anymore , so we use Ishq e Majazi not as a tool of intimacy but for a Morality Play with politics embedded . The religionists use Ishq e Rasul. What all of us forget , is that both are only possible enroute to Ishq e Haqiqi . Sadda Haq is not about power , its about our Infinity . Swa-raj or Ishq is nothing if its not for a communion with the divine . And modernity , science and academics will never get it along with atheists ever . Just like the clans of Heer and Ranjha . So Jihad-e-Aashiqui is an eternal battle . ʻIshq is an Arabic word used in Arabic as well as many other languages. (Arabic: عشق; in Somali: caashaq or (cishqi) in Persian: eshgh; in Urdu: ishq; in Dari: eshq; in Pashto: eshq; in Turkish: aşk and in Azerbaijani: eşq), means love. The word is derived from ‘ashiqah, a vine: the common belief is that when love takes its root in the heart of a lover, everything other than God is effaced. In Arabic, which is its language of origin, it is a noun. However, in Urdu it is used as both verb and noun. ‘Āshiq (male) and ‘Āshiqah (female) are its subjective forms. Māshūq (male) and Māshūqah (female) are its objective forms. In addition to Arabic, these forms are used in Persian and Urdu. In Urdu, Ishq (عشق) is used to refer to fervent love for any object, person or God. However, it is mostly used in its religious context. In Urdu, three very common religious terminologies have been derived from Ishq. These terminologies are Ishq-e-Haqīqi (love of Truth), Ishq-e majāzi (love of Gods creation i.e. a human), and ishq-e rasūl / ishq-e Muhammadi (love of the Messenger / love of Muhammad). Other than these, in non-religious context, ‘ishq is a synonym for obsessive love. In Hindi, ishq (इश्क़) is mostly used to refer to romantic love in its extreme passionate form. In Islams Sufi and mystic doctrine it is a concept which refers to divine love or a creatures love for its creator; i.e. mans love for God. Ishq-e Haqīqi (عشق حقیقی) literally means the real love but metaphorically it means the love of God. It refers to the belief that only God is worth loving and He is the only one who can return His creatures love for Him. Ishq-e Majāzi (عشق مجازی) literally means metaphorical love. It refers to the love for Gods creation i.e. love of a man for a woman or another man and vice versa. It is said to be generated by beloved persons external beauty. According to some schools of thought in Sufism, Ishq-e Majāzi can eventually lead to Ishq-e Haqiqi while others believe it cant. Ishq-e Rasūl (عشق رسول; in Arabic: ʻIshq ar-Rasūl, Arabic: عشق الرسول) means love of Muhammad, an important part of being a Muslim. According to hadith it is necessary for a Muslim to love Muhammad more than mere human beings; even more than their own life. The love of Muhammad is Iman according to Muslim belief.
