(If at all possible, could someone please read the below at the gathering?) Id like the following excerpted quotation read, not because it meant anything to my sister Mary Anne, but because it means something to me. Those of you who knew her well know she wasnt religious; in fact she considered herself an atheist. This quotation uses the word God, and in order to avoid her haunting me forever, I want to explain my personal understanding of that word in this passage. To me it does not refer to the Christian deity or any deity. Its merely a metaphor for the great mystery that lies beyond physical death--a realm, I believe, free of pain or grief or guilt or constraints. A realm of release, light, purity, peace, beauty, and love. The realm she flew off to on the morning of her passing, when Sue opened the windows and said to her, “Here, let’s let the morning birds carry you away.” The realm Mary Anne is taking a temporary break from right now, so she can be there partying with you guys. There’s no doubt in my heart that she’s there in spirit, so please make sure you laugh more than you cry. It’s what she would want. From Kahlil Gibran’s “The Prophet”: On Death and Dying For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered? Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.
