If, because of weather or whatever crop failure and/or financial panic, we see TSHTF, less than 0.1% of the current population will have the skillsets needed to survive and raise another generation. All thru history, when govt collapsed, people returned to rural villages, but now, even those in rural areas are too dependent on modern infrastructure support, much less the healthcare- that would be needed to cope with contagions. Viruses are not the only thing that may go viral. Bad as Bubonic plague in Europe was, it only wiped out 30%, and that was enuf to destroy governmental control and trade networks. We think of the villagers as ignorant, but the fact Oetzi had 22 different kinds of wood on his person is a clue to the knowledge base of local ecosystems- that no longer exists, and even if it did, climate change could make that less relevant.
